--------------------------------------------------------------------------- VM/386 4.01A (4/18/96) Release Notes For Booting WIN95 or VM/386 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Release 4.01A allows VM/386 to run on systems that have Windows 95 installed. For this to work, the system MUST be set up for "dual boot" between Win 95 and a prior version of MSDOS. This is an option when Win 95 is installed. VM/386 will NOT run with the "MSDOS 7.0" that is part of Win 95. To start VM/386 on a system with Win 95, the user must press F4 immediately after the "Starting Windows 95..." message is displayed. They only have about two seconds to press the key. F4 causes Win 95 to boot into the prior version of MSDOS (the same thing can also be done by pressing F8 and selecting the "prior DOS version" option from the boot menu). Once MSDOS is booted, the user can start VM as they always have. Note: There is an option on the Win 95 shutdown dialog to start standalone MSDOS. This is NOT the same as dual boot, and will NOT work for VM/386. The user should select "restart" from this dialog, wait for the machine to reboot, and then hit F4. To install VM/386 on a Win 95 system the user must first dual boot into MSDOS as just described, and then put the VM master disk in drive A: and press CTRL-ALT-DEL. Installation won't work properly if Win 95 was running just before the VM master disk is booted.
